January 28 - The first ski lift operated in the U.S. is at Woodstock, Vermont.
February 1 - President Franklin Roosevelt establishes the Export-Import Bank of Washington.
March 5 - The first Mother-in-Law Day is celebrated in Amarillo, Texas.
March 24 - The U.S. Act declares that the Philippines will be independent, starting in 1945.
April 20 - The film, Stand Up and Cheer, is previewed in New York City and introduces child star Shirley Temple.
June 6 - President Roosevelt establishes the Securities Exchange Commission to regulate exchanges and transactions involving all securities.
June 15 - The National Guard becomes part of the U.S. Army in a time of war through the National Guard Act.
June 19 - The Federal Communications Commission is established to supervise radio, telegraph and telephone communications.
August 16 - American explorer William Beebe descends 3,028 feet in his bathysphere into the ocean near Bermuda.
